Altec Model One

Found a pair of these in the trash across the street from my office. Real wood veneer chipped on all corners and scratched everywhere. I nearly left them to be thrown out but decided to dig them out and was happy I did. These are Altec Model Ones in good working condition. Eventually I will refurbish the cabinet and grills so they look nearly good as new. I never heard Altec's and understand these are not the best representation of the breed but think they provide an idea of that West Coast sound Altec is famous for. They sound tizzy in the treble (there is a dial on the rear allowing treble adjustment) and bouncy in the bass. Midrange sounds thin but clear. Overall not my favorite sound but certainly fun to listen to.

Compared to my DIY Pioneer/Piezo the Altec's sound boxy and thin. They also sound smaller. Going back and fourth between these two speakers reminds me why I gravitate and enjoy 'full range drivers' so much. The Altec's lack life in the midrange. But that doesn't mean they sound bad. They are fun to listen to with a clear sound. They just don't have the mids I have become accustomed to even when comparing to inexpensive full range driver speakers like the Pioneer B20.

A fun blast from the past and a decent match for the Onkyo receiver I found a few months ago.
