KLH Model Ten

Found a pair of these in the trash. I have had some good luck finding old speakers this way. The cabinets are usually well made using real wood veneer. Unfortunately, these old KLH Model Ten's were sealed up front to back. The grill was not removable. If everything worked I would have just cleaned them up and enjoyed but one of the tweeters was not working. I had to take a hammer and break out the back of the box. The screws were still not accessible so I had to take off one of the sides. Then the grill slid out and all screws were visible.

These cabinets will look good as new and both tweeters will be replaced to match. The woofers look and sound great. They do not go as deep as you would expect with a more current 10" woofer but they go deep enough for satisfying sound and the replacement tweeters add detail and delicacy the original lacks. Quite honestly, the speaker with working woofer and tweeter did not sound good at all to me. I was thinking about replacing the 10" woofer with the Dayton Classic, which fits right in place of the original, but since the old woofers worked (they have a cloth surround that seems to be perfectly fine and plenty pliant) and replacing the horrid sounding tweeter with something better cleaned up the sound nicely they will end up keeping their stock KLH woofer and remain 'semi' classic. The cabinets were loaded with 30 year old insulation that I was glad to get rid of and will replace with AcoustaStuff. Perhaps playing with the amount of stuffing will improve bass response.

Along with the Altec Model Ones recently found, the KLH are also a fun blast from the past and a good match for the Onkyo TX-5000 receiver I found a few months ago.
